Class Assignment 1

This first assignment is an individual work. We were asked to write a 800 words essay based on a vegetable that we had chosen. The vegetable that I had chosen was French Bean. We have to observe our vegetables by our five senses, which are taste, sight, hearing, touch and smell while writing the essay.

This assignment has improved my senses of observation on the details. I learned to observe the french bean from outside to inside step by step. Besides, I also learned to express my observation into the form of essay.

I like this assignment because it was funny and interesting as well as improving my writing skill on descriptive essay.

Class Assignment 2

This is the second individual assignment in my English 2. We were asked to write a 800 words compare or contrast essay based on the topic that we had chosen, either musical movies or historical movies. I chose to write a contrast essay on the musical movies. In this essay, I had decided to contrast these two movies, which were "The School of Rock" and "High School Musical". The three differences that I had contrasted between these movies were the way they perform their music, the plot, and environment of the movie.

I like this assignment because it was not a boring work as I can watch and analyse the movies before I start to write the essay. It actually is a quite challenging work for me because I seldom write compare and contrast essay.

Class Assignment 3

This assignment was a class debate, which was a group work. We have to form a group of 3 members to debate a specific situation with our opponent. The topic that we had choses was

18. Gifts that are given to political leaders and their wives when they are on an official visit belong to the nation.

My group members were Wong Kim Wan and Jeffrey Tan, whereas our opponent were Sheila Ann, Mercy and Even.

This assignment had given me the chance to try the first debate in my life. It made me learnt the procedure schedule of a proper debate. Besides, I also obtained the knowledge on how to analyse a situation and do a proper research and preparation before starting the debate. It must be supported by many examples and evidences if you wan to fight against your opponent. Through this debate, I had found that my weakness, which was insufficient confidence while delivering my point as well as negotiating with my opponent.

Research Assignment

This was the last assignment, which was also a group work in English 2. My partner was Peter Phang June Ee. We were required do a 2500-3000 words research paper. This assignment was focusing on comparative research. We have to study four examples of tailor shops in Klang Valley and Seremban by visiting and interviewing the owners of the tailor shops.

After finished the research paper, we have to do a video presentation based on the topic about the tailor business.

Our topic is

You work for a department promoting lifelong learning in a local university. You have been asked to prepare a talk that explains how tailor’s have played an important role all though the years as well as the contemporary challenges faced by tailors. Your audience is comprised of people form missed backgrounds and ages. Most of them are very eager but some have come along to accompany a friend or spouse/relative.

What strategy will you use and how will you convince them?

I have learned to interview target and translate the information to the form of essay through this research paper. It was a good experience for me to construct a such heavy paper which consisted of 2500-3000 words.

... Effective Public Communication ...

Class Test
This test was given to us in week 11 which is the week after we came back from the break. For this test, all of us have to prepare four chapters, which were chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6 from the textbook "Human Communication: Principles and Communication". It consisted of multiple choices questions, fill in the blanks and essay questions.

It was actually a tough tes for me and I did not do well in it as I did not prepare it as early as I can.

The first learning outcome that I have obtained is to be able to explain the basic ideas of each chosen topic with reference to the related theories learned in this course. After finished the essay, I had a clearer vision on the chapters of verbal and nonverbal messages.

The second learning outcome is to be mastery of the topic and ability to express this in the form of an academic essay with proper APA citations and referencing. For instance, I have strengthened my writing skill after completed this essay.

I like this assignment because it did not just help me to revise the chapters on verbal and nonverbal messages, but also strengthen my writing skill together with enhancing my APA citations and referencing.

Assignment 2

This assignment is a group work. My group members in this assignment are Tan Ming Long, Tan Yong Ming, Phang June Ee and Mindy Lai Min Hui. We have to do an illustration of EPC concepts on the topic that we had chosen.

Our topic is

6. Conflict and Negotiation

The first learning outcome that I have learnt is to be able to explain the basic ideas of each chosen topic. We did analysis and research on the topic and the chapter that we have learned in lecture.

The second learning outcome is to use new examples or situations relevant to the topic in the form of dialogues / graphics and report and derive an informed opinion on the current state of the business' operation to explain the topic. My individual job in this assignment is to help my members to illustrate and draw the comics. It helps to enhance my imagination and drawing skill while drawing the comics.

The third learning outcome that I have obtained is to prove mastery of the topic by compilation of knowledge through graphics / dialogue scripts. We did our discussion on the storyline and the dialogue scripts of the comics. Beside, we also discussed the theory that we can applied in our comics.

Favourite Topic
My favourite topic in this subject is Topic 5, Managing Employees (part 1). This topic is all about the employee behaviour, personalities, attitudes and motivation. I found that this topic was interesting because the way that Mr Joe teaching this topic was totally different from other topics. During the lecture, we were divide into group and were ask to perform a drama / situation to explain the importance of employee personalities, attitudes and motivation in a business. We all were having fun while acting in the drama.

Least Favourite Topic
My least favourite topic in this subject is Topic 3, Business Ethics and Social Responsibility. This topic is about the areas of business ethics and social responsibility. I dislike this topic because it is a quite boring lecture and information for me. I think the topic can be more interesting if Mr Joe deliver the lecture by using the same method as he used in teaching Topic 5.

Useful Topic
The most useful topic that I have learnt is Topic 5, Managing Employees (part 1). This is because I think it was useful for me to handle my employees in the future.

Project 1

In Project 1, we were ask to do a business proposal with a group of members. My group members are William Tan, Nigel Lim and Chuah Wei Hong. In this business proposal, we have to create our business and prepare the business background, target, products and services, market analysis, competitive environment, marketing strategies, sales strategies, management strategies and so on. Our company is selling the toy cars and we have decided to name our company CAR N TOY (CNT), which is related to our name too, Chuah, Nigel and Tans. After finishing this project, I have learnt the details and procedure to start a business as well as preparing a business proposal.

Final Project

This Final Project is a big project, because we are given 10 weeks before the due date. In this project, we have to prepare for a business charity drive in group, which means we have to plan and start a business in Taylor's University during the charity week. The charity week started from 6.5.2013 to 10.5.2013. My group members were Phang June Ee, Tan Yong Ming, Yong Chang Theng and Zachery. Within the charity week, we have to earn the profit and reach the target which is RM 2000.00. All the profit is supposed to be donated to any charity organisation. We decided to sell smartphone accessories, such as cases and ear jacks, lighters and sunglasses. After a week of running business, we failed to reach the target, but at least we earn RM800 ++. We have donated all the profit to Yayasan Nanyang Press. After the week, we have to propose a report about the details of our business and hand in to Mr Joe. This project made me learnt that it is not a easy thing to run a business, and many aspects have to be considered while running a business.

... Mathematics ...

Introduction

This is the first assignment that was given by Miss Ann one week before our mathematics test 1. With my group members, Tan Yong Ming, Koay Wei Jia and Wong Kim Wan, four of us are given a structure and have to calculate out the Total Surface Area and the Volume of the structure. After that , we have to use our own materials to build up the structure with the same scale ratio. I am going to show the three mathematical theories that we have used in this assignment.

First Theory

Volume of Pyramid

1/3 x base area x height

I used this theory to find the volume of the whole pyramid first, then I find the volume of the smaller pyramid by using ratio method.

Second Theory

Pythagorus Theorem

$a^2 + b^2 = c^2\!\,$

$c = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}. \,$

I used this theory to find the height of the triangle first, so as to find to surface area of the triangle.

Third Theory

6 Basic Trigonometric Functions

$\sin A = \frac {\textrm{opposite}} {\textrm{hypotenuse}} = \frac {a} {h}.$

$\cos A = \frac {\textrm{adjacent}} {\textrm{hypotenuse}} = \frac {b} {h}.$

$\tan A = \frac {\textrm{opposite}} {\textrm{adjacent}} = \frac {a} {b}.$

I used this theory to find the angle of the triangle, so as to calculate the total area, sector area and the segment area of it.

Reflection

I like the two big challenges of this assignment which are the calculation part and the constructing part. It is actually very tough for my group, we faced many problems while calculating it. Fortunately, with the help of Miss Ann, finally we success to complete this difficult task. Besides, this assignment also help me to memories some of the theories to sit in my test in the following week.

Project 1

The Rise of Civilisation

This project was given to us to design a 10+ pages timeline and journal of Thailand.

In this project my group members was Tan Ming Long, who was a very hardworking and friendly members.

For the timeline, we have done the research on the ancient history of Thailand and design a timeline of it from Pre-Thai Civilisation to End of The Absolute Monarchy.

For the journal, we have done the research on the culture of Thailand on different areas which are form of government, subsistences, details of architecture of the temple and so on.

After finishing this project, we have obtained more knowledge about the culture and civilisation of the country, THAILAND.
